A waste recovery centre plan has been submitted in Bolton . It is expected to handle most of the city-region’s waste, if approved. This scheme would replace the GMCA’s existing Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at Sharston with a shiny new one at Over Hulton. Over in Heywood , the first stage of a 1,000-home scheme for Heywood has been revealed. A total of 186 houses would be delivered on the plot of land off Hareshill Road North. The land is one of a number of plots allocated in the South Heywood masterplan. Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has submitted a planning application to replace its existing Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at Longley Lane, Sharston with a new plant at the former in-vessel composting (IVC) building on Salford Road, Over Hulton, Bolton. If approved, the Bolton building will see thousands of tonnes of waste unloaded from vehicles into a tipping hall. The material will then be loaded by mobile plant onto a conveyor system. All waste received on site will be later transferred elsewhere for further processing and recycling. The Brewers Arms, on Ladybarn Lane in Fallowfield , has fallen into disrepair since closing a few years ago. Now, developers Sandton Capital Ltd, have applied for permission to convert the ground floor into a retail unit and construct a two-storey extension to build five one-bedroom apartments on the first and second floors. Roadworks Manchester council is in the middle of a programme of winter gully clearing, with teams moving between suburbs. Next week, they visit Levenshulme . A full list of roads can be seen below. (Image: Google Maps) Road closed for ‘safety-critical’ emergency works to gas pipeline A road will remain shut for the rest of the month as emergency works are carried out on gas pipes supplying thousands of homes in Oldham . Routine maintenance works were due to take place on the gas network under Grimshaw Lane in Chadderton . But due to their poor condition, Cadent Gas Ltd will now have to completely replace a 50-metre section of the pipes. A road closure is in place at the junction with Foxdenton Lane and Broadgate. The gas suppliers plan to install a ‘bypass’ during this week, which will ensure local homes continue to have a gas supply during the repairs. This involves adding a temporary route for gas to flow while engineers install the permanent new pipes. A planning application for 186 houses on the plot of land off Hareshill Road North has been tabled with Rochdale council. It is part of the wider scheme for hundreds of three, four and five-bedroom family homes in the area. The South Heywood masterplan, which received outline approval in 2020, is expected to deliver 1.88 million sq ft of logistics space; a retail centre; a 2.2km link road; a primary school; sports pitches and neighbourhood play areas. The giant scheme forms part of the Places for Everyone (PfE) plan, which has been adopted by nine out of 10 Greater Manchester councils. PfE is expected to bring thousands of jobs, new homes, and sustainable growth across the city-region by 2039. Stockport The ‘eyesore’ office building in Stockport set to be demolished for new homes Standing on the Wellington Street-Piccadilly roundabout in Stockport , the derelict office block Victoria House has seen new buildings popping up around the town centre. As development has taken place around Stockport, the empty Victoria House has attracted trouble, being ‘the subject [of] an arson attack in 2023’ according to planning documents sent to the council. New plans have been submitted this month to move ahead with the demolition of Victoria House in 2026. Reports sent to the council state that work to knock down Victoria House could begin in March and last for around seven weeks, opening up the land for construction of the new homes. Tameside View 9 Images How Armentieres Square in Stalybridge could look after work is complete (Image: Tameside council) Months of traffic disruption to hit Greater Manchester town as major works begin Stalybridge is destined for months of disruption as major works begin next month. Improvements to the town centre are scheduled to start on February 2. The idea behind the move from Tameside council is to ‘make the area greener, safer, and more welcoming for residents, visitors, and businesses’. Improvements across Market Street ; Armentieres Square; Trinity Street; Grosvenor Square; Corporation Street and Old Town Hall Gardens; upgrading lighting and surfaces to offer safer pedestrian routes; and new areas for events and community use are all touted. From Monday, February 2, Phase One will commence in Armentieres Square and parts of Trinity Street, which will be completely closed off to vehicles until February 9. Between February 9 and August 2026, traffic will move one way (northbound only) through Trinity Street and Armentieres Square as part of Phase Two. Mottram-in-Longdendale/Hollingworth, Tameside Planned road layout changes will take place on Roe Cross Road & A57 Mottram Moor. The preliminary works are part of a wider project to build two new link roads between Manchester and Sheffield. Works expected to last until January 31, 2028. The route, which has been long-promised for Trafford , has taken a huge step forward after an application was submitted seeking planning approval for the scheme. The project aims to divert traffic away from the A6144, reducing congestion and improving travel times for drivers and public transport users. The 2.7-mile road would link the A6144 Manchester Road to the west with the A6144 Carrington Spur in the east. The scheme forms part of a wider masterplan for the area, known as New Carrington. Ultimately, some 5,000 new homes and 350,000sqm of new employment space are expected to be delivered there by 2040. Opening in March, the venue will be run by the Mundin family, which is also behind the likes of The Savoy, in Heaton Moor, and the Northern Light, in Sale . An application submitted to Trafford Council seeks permission to convert a unit in Stretford town centre, and reveals more about proposals for the area. Also named The Northern Light Cinema, the theatre will be located in a new unit in Pinnington Lane, where Stretford Mall once stood. It will boast three screens, all of which will be “accessible to all”. There will also be a lounge area and foyer, ticketing office, as well as a bar for cinema-goers, with the Mundin family promising this will offer the best wine wine, local craft beer, homemade cake, fresh popcorn and cinema treats. Wigan View 9 Images The Lovers Lane site that is currently ‘under offer’ (Image: ) Deal close to sell council owned green land at ‘Lovers Lane’ for housing with six other sites up for sale Council-owned green land in Atherton is set to be sold off to developers to build homes. Wigan Council is seeking interest from developers for a residential-led scheme on land close to Lovers Lane, between the town and Leigh. A notice on the ‘development opportunities’ section of the council’s website gives details of the 7.7 acre plot which the authority describes as an ‘excellent opportunity’.
