Ten years in prison for man who sexually assaulted and groomed teenage girl

Daniel Hashmi has been sentenced to ten years in prison for grooming and sexually assaulting a teenage girl at his shop in Stockport. He was found guilty of six offences, including attempted rape, and will be on the sex offender’s register for life. The victim and her family have been praised for their courage, and support services are being provided. Authorities emphasized their commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and encouraging victims to come forward.

Stockport shopkeeper Daniel Hashmi was jailed for ten years today after grooming a teenage girl with vodka and vapes, then sexually assaulting her in the back room of his Wellington Road South premises between November and December last year.

Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard the 44-year-old, of Audley Road, Levenshulme, blocked the door with a sofa to trap his victim before carrying out the attacks. A jury convicted him of three counts of sexual assault on a female, two counts of attempted rape and assault by penetration after he denied all charges.

Hashmi, born 14 October 1980, must sign the sex offenders’ register for life and is subject to both a restraining order and a lifelong sexual harm prevention order. His arrest in December 2024 came only after the sister of one of the girl’s friends reported her suspicions to police.

Detective Constable Ben Swapp of Stockport’s Complex Safeguarding Team said: “The girl and her family have shown enormous courage, and we will continue to support them. Aspire social workers and Independent Sexual Violence Advisors are working with the victim to help in rebuilding her life. GMP’s Stockport Complex Safeguarding Team is a multi-agency team focused on protecting vulnerable children and young people from exploitation and harm. This team, which includes police officers, social workers, and other professionals, works to identify, assess, and respond to safeguarding concerns, particularly those related to child exploitation. We are absolutely committed to removing offenders like Hashmi from the streets, as the danger he poses to society, and particularly to children, is significant. Hopefully today’s sentence and our investigation will give victims the confidence to report these types of crimes and trust us to investigate them thoroughly to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

In a statement read to the court, the victim said: “I thought I could trust him. He is an adult and they are meant to be protectors, but after this I will never trust anyone again. This has affected me more than anyone will ever know - I feel betrayed and completely let down. He has taken away the most important things that I will never get back - I feel used and that’s the worst thing.”
