Robbery Foiled by Police Dog in Ashton Town Centre

A 41-year-old man was arrested Tuesday morning after assaulting a cash-in-transit driver and stealing a cash box on Old Street in Ashton town centre.

The robbery occurred at 8:45am when the suspect approached the driver, knocking him to the ground with kicks and punches before fleeing with the cash box toward Church Street on foot. The injured driver called 999, and during his call for help, a Greater Manchester Police dog handler patrolling nearby heard the incident broadcast on his radio.

The specialist operations officer immediately responded to the area, tracking the suspect’s location before engaging in a brief foot chase. With assistance from his police dog PD Axel, the handler successfully arrested the suspect, who was still in possession of the stolen cash box.

“I can’t imagine the fear that the driver felt when he was subjected to this terrifying and outrageous robbery,” said Superintendent Paul Walker of GMP’s Specialist Operations. “This is a great example of the proactive work that happens daily in Greater Manchester by officers who relentlessly pursue those who are blighting our communities and causing the most harm. This was really good outcome with a suspect arrested and all stolen cash recovered.”

Anyone with information about the incident should call 101 quoting log 636 of 24/12/2024, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
