Suspect, 38, arrested by police investigating rape of girl
A 38-year-old man has been arrested in Rochdale on suspicion of raping a girl under 18, as part of Operation Sherwood, GMP's investigation into non-recent child abuse in Oldham between 2011 and 2014. The arrest followed a recent disclosure from a survivor, and the suspect remains in custody.
A 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of raping a girl under 18 as part of an investigation into historical child sexual abuse, Greater Manchester Police said.
Officers detained the suspect in Rochdale on Monday morning after receiving a recent disclosure from a survivor. He remains in custody for questioning.
The arrest is the latest under Operation Sherwood, GMP’s probe into non-recent child abuse alleged to have occurred in Oldham between 2011 and 2014. Investigators say the reported offence took place in Bolton.
Detectives described the arrest as “planned” and emphasised that enquiries are accelerating. In the past three months, 13 suspects have been detained under Operation Sherwood, including two men aged 38 and 40 arrested last week in Oldham on suspicion of raping a child. Both have been bailed under strict conditions.
Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker said the girls who suffered the abuse are now women who “have placed their faith in the GMP of today to bring justice”. She added that specialist officers are working with survivors and partner agencies to ensure the investigation progresses “at pace and in a manner that is right for them”, while acknowledging the complexities of such cases.
“Our enquiries will continue to ramp up,” Parker said.
