Stockport police conducted a targeted overnight operation to combat burglaries and car thefts, resulting in a 50% drop in burglaries over two weeks. The initiative aimed to reduce crime during the festive season and reassure the community.
Stockport Police Mount Pre-Christmas Burglary Blitz, Cutting Crime by Half
A massive pre-Christmas police operation has slashed burglary rates in Stockport by 50% in just two weeks, with officers arresting seven key suspects and charging eight people in a four-day blitz across the district.
The cross-border operation, involving 20-30 officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Neighbourhood Crime Team alongside Cheshire Police and specialist GMP units, targeted known burglary hotspots in Stockport, South Manchester and the Cheshire border. Officers worked night shifts to catch criminals in the act, using intelligence to identify suspects in recent serious acquisitive offences.
Stockport, previously the division with the highest number of vehicles stolen through burglaries, now boasts the lowest residential burglary rate in the area. The operation saw the Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit, Tactical Dog Unit and additional neighbourhood teams coordinate their response to protect communities during the festive season.
Among those caught was a 28-year-old Brinnington man found hiding in his loft at 4am, who admitted to 13 burglaries and was charged with five offences including two motor vehicle thefts. A 16-year-old boy wanted for a series of electric bike-enabled robberies, where balaclava-wearing thieves targeted mobile phones, was arrested after fleeing from patrols and found hiding in undergrowth near Tiviot Dale. He remains in custody for 27 offences.
Detective Sergeant Matt Tarr, who led the operation, said: “This targeted work is one of the biggest cross-border operations we have conducted this year and highlights just a small amount of the great work being carried out. This showcases the hard work and dedication of the Neighbourhood Crime Team and helps provide some reassurance to those living in Stockport.”
The robust approach will continue throughout December and into 2024, with police warning criminals: “We know who you are and we will do everything in our power to make sure you are held to account for your actions by spending Christmas in prison.”
