Statement following the inquest into the death of Teresa McMahon
Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker of GMP expressed condolences for Teresa McMahon's death, emphasizing efforts to support her loved ones and address concerns raised by the coroner. GMP has implemented measures to improve investigations, including clearer retention periods for body-worn video and the use of tools like Clare’s Law and the Domestic Abuse Prevention Order pilot. The force aims to protect vulnerable people, particularly women and girls, and has seen an increase in positive outcomes for victims.
Greater Manchester Police has issued a comprehensive response following the death of Teresa, acknowledging the devastating impact on her loved ones and outlining measures to improve protection for vulnerable people.
Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker, GMP lead for vulnerability and public protection, confirmed the force provided a full review to the coroner after complaints about their initial investigation into Teresa’s death. “We have done all we can to ensure the coroner establishes the facts behind Teresa’s death, and to provide her loved ones with the answers they deserve,” Parker stated.
The police force has addressed concerns raised by the coroner regarding the use of scene photos in non-suspicious circumstances and established clearer retention periods for body-worn video footage. These changes form part of GMP’s victim-centred approach, which has seen approximately 1,300 more victims securing justice compared to three years ago.
Parker emphasized that protecting vulnerable people remains central to their operations across Greater Manchester, with officers responding more quickly to incidents, arresting more suspects, and utilizing innovative tools including Clare’s Law. The force has made almost 1,500 disclosures under Clare’s Law this year to those with the right to ask or know about their partner’s violent history. Additionally, GMP successfully secured their first Domestic Abuse Prevention Order in court today as part of a government pilot program being trialled in Bury.
