Stars from Oldham return to see the new home of Oldham Theatre Workshop
Famous alumni Millie Gibson, Seb Lowe, and Noah Valentine visited the new home of Oldham Theatre Workshop in the restored Old Library building. The project aims to provide a purpose-built space for the workshop and includes other community facilities.
Oldham Theatre Workshop’s most celebrated graduates stood beneath the restored Victorian arches of the Old Library on Wednesday, witnessing the transformation of their childhood training ground into a permanent home for future performers.
Millie Gibson, currently starring as Doctor Who’s companion, returned to Oldham alongside musician Seb Lowe and Waterloo Road actor Noah Valentine to tour the Grade II listed building that will house the renowned theatre school from next summer. The trio, who trained together at the workshop, examined the space where rehearsal rooms and performance areas are being carved from the former library’s derelict shell.
“This building holds so many memories for Oldhamers because it gave people opportunities, no matter what their background,” said Council Leader Arooj Shah, who joined the actors for the visit. The restoration project, undertaken by Tilbury Douglas, sits just metres from the workshop’s previous location and represents a £multi-million investment in the borough’s cultural future.
The actors spoke passionately about the workshop’s influence on their careers. “Oldham Theatre Workshop means the world to me,” Gibson reflected, while Lowe credited the organisation as “a great deal of the reason I do what I do.” Valentine, who joined at age 11, described it as “my family” and “a second home.” The new facility will share the building with Gallery Oldham exhibition space, council offices, and community meeting rooms when it opens in summer 2025.
