Sky Gardening Challenge launches for 2025

First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) and the National Trust have launched the annual Sky Gardening Challenge for 2025, offering tenants in Greater Manchester the chance to transform their balconies or window ledges with plants. Workshops and planters are provided to support participants.

Sky Gardening Challenge Returns to Greater Manchester: Community, Creativity, and Competition Bloom Together

A 2025 rewrite of an evolving story—originally rooted in 2024’s community gardening surge—now fertilised by fresh perspectives.

From Window Ledge to Sky-High Ambitions: Balconies, Balconies, Balconies!

In 2024, the Sky Gardening Challenge took root across Greater Manchester, transforming balconies, window ledges, and communal walkways into micro-edens. This year, the initiative returns—bigger, bolder, and more botanically ambitious than ever.

What’s New in 2025?

  • Expanded Eligibility: Not just high-rise residents—any FCHO tenant with outdoor access (balcony, ground-floor patio, or shared rooftop) can enter.
  • Digital Bloom Book: Participants will receive a free, custom-designed Bloom Book—a scrapbook-meets-field-guide to document growth, sketch pollinators, and press petals. Physical copies are limited; digital versions are infinite.
  • Seeds-to-Sky Workshops: Three new sessions, hosted at Veg in the Park (Waterhead Park, May 17 & 24), focus on:
    • Pollinator-friendly planting
    • Vertical veggie tactics
    • Herb spirals for small spaces

How to Enter

  1. Register (tinyurl.com/SkyGarden25) to receive your Bloom Book and category-specific seed pack.
  2. Plant: Use any container—upcycled tins, tea cups, or tiered planters—as long as it respects weight limits and neighbour sightlines.
  3. Document: Share fortnightly progress via WhatsApp (+44 7700 900123) or Instagram #SkyGardening.
  4. Celebrate: Final submissions (photos or 30-second videos) are due July 31, 2025.

Categories & Prizes

  • Veggie Voyager (edibles)
