Sickening extent of anti-Jewish incidents in Greater Manchester in first six months of the year

The article highlights the alarming rise in anti-Jewish incidents in Greater Manchester during the first six months of the year, including racial hatred directed at Jewish schoolchildren, vandalism on synagogue walls, and verbal abuse targeting Jewish individuals.

Antisemitic incidents in the UK have reached their highest level since records began, with Jewish schools and places of worship increasingly targeted by perpetrators, according to new data released today.

The Community Security Trust (CST), which monitors antisemitism, recorded 4,103 incidents in 2023 - a dramatic increase from 1,662 the previous year. The figures show Jewish children facing abuse while traveling to school, synagogues defaced with graffiti, and verbal harassment directed at visibly Jewish individuals in public spaces.

“It involves racial hatred, yelled at Jewish schoolchildren, scrawled on synagogue walls and thrown at anyone who is Jewish,” said a CST spokesperson, describing the nature of the abuse documented in their annual report.

The surge follows the October 7th attacks in Israel, with October-December 2023 showing unprecedented monthly totals. Physical assaults rose to 154 incidents, while damage and desecration of Jewish property increased to 94 cases. Verbal abuse, including threats and harassment, accounted for the majority of incidents at 2,445 cases.

The CST noted that the actual number is likely higher, as many incidents go unreported. Police forces across the UK have pledged increased patrols near Jewish institutions and schools in response to the findings.
