Corey Pearson from Crompton and Royton has won the Oldham and District Scratch golf championship with a level par 70 in windy conditions, featuring notable birdies and a strong performance. Scott Bloor finished runner-up, while Kris Sutcliffe took third place. Crompton and Royton also secured the Brierley Cup team trophy. The Centenary Trophy stableford competition was won by Paul Hewitt, with divisional prizes awarded to various golfers. The event was well-organized, with the host club praised for the course condition.

Corey Pearson captured the Oldham and District Scratch golf championship with a level-par 70 that featured two dramatic chip-ins for birdie during Wednesday’s blustery final round at Crompton and Royton.

The Crompton and Royton star holed from the bunker at the par-3 4th and again from off the green at the 16th, adding further birdies at the 2nd, 7th, 8th and decisive 18th to edge out clubmate Scott Bloor by a single shot. Bloor’s closing birdie gave him a 71 and solo second place, while three-time champion Kris Sutcliffe signed for 73 to finish third.

Reigning champion Lee Rowbotham threatened early but saw his title defense unravel with three-putt bogeys at the 12th and 13th on his way to a 76. The host club dominated proceedings as James Booth took net honors with a 75-5-70 and Rick Ollerton claimed second net with 77-6-71. Crompton and Royton’s combined 288 total from Pearson, Bloor, Sutcliffe and Gary Melling secured the Brierley Cup team trophy.

Paul Hewitt denied the hosts a sweep by capturing the Centenary Trophy stableford with 42 points, including a net eagle at the opening hole, to overtake Brookdale veteran John Hughes’ morning-leading 40.
