Saying it with flowers

A well dressing display is currently on show in Delph, opposite the White Lion, until August 31, 2025. The tradition was revived in 2017 following the reopening of Saddleworth Museum and has become an annual event, with Delph hosting its first in 2018. This year's display celebrates the 175th anniversary of Delph Band, designed by Judi Brazier and crafted by Kath Kenyon using hydrangea petals and peppercorns. Local communities and groups contributed flowers for the creation.

Delph’s latest well dressing tribute stands opposite the White Lion, where it will remain on view until Sunday, 31 August, honouring 175 years of the Delph Band.

The vibrant tableau, created by designer Judi Brazier and constructed by Kath Kenyon, uses hundreds of hydrangea petals set within a peppercorn outline. Residents from Delph, Dobcross and Uppermill joined Saddleworth Women’s Morris and Clog to supply the mass of flowers needed for the display.

The tradition returned to the area in 2017 alongside the reopening of Saddleworth Museum and proved so popular that it has continued annually. Delph staged its first well dressing the following year, establishing the village as a regular participant in the custom.
