Roughyeds boss Long confirms captains and leadership group

Oldham Roughyeds head coach Sean Long has confirmed Matty Wildie as vice-captain for the 2025 season, supporting club captain Jordan Turner. They will be part of a six-man leadership group, including new signings Josh Drinkwater, Matty Ashurst, Gil Dudson, and Adam Milner. Long praised the leadership qualities of both Turner and Wildie, emphasizing their commitment to driving team standards. The team has a break before their next Challenge Cup match against Barrow on February 9.

Oldham head coach Sean Long has named veteran hooker Matty Wildie as the club’s new vice-captain for the 2025 season, with hometown hero Jordan Turner retaining the captain’s armband.

Wildie takes over the role following the retirement of last season’s vice-captain Joe Wardle, who has transitioned to Long’s assistant coach. The 33-year-old hooker will help lead a six-man leadership group that includes new signings Josh Drinkwater, Matty Ashurst, Gil Dudson and Adam Milner.

“JT as captain was outstanding last year and Matty Wildie will be vice-captain,” Long told Roughyeds TV. “I also have some good leaders that we have brought in from other clubs in Adam Milner, Matty Ashurst, Gil Dudson and Josh Drinkwater so you can’t really go wrong with our leadership group who speak really well and drive the standards.”

Long praised Wildie’s leadership qualities and work ethic, noting the experienced player’s commitment to the squad. “Wildie leads by example and gives 100% in training and in games. He has high standards and that is the sign of a true leader. He doesn’t point the blame at anyone else and he just gets better. It is a good fit.”

The Roughyeds have a weekend off after enduring three bruising matches in seven days against Super League champions Wigan plus Cup victories over Rochdale Hornets and Mayfield. Long’s side returns to action on Sunday, February 9 when they host Barrow in the Challenge Cup third round at Boundary Park, with tickets and hospitality packages available now.
