Road alerts
Five separate road works will hit Greater Manchester routes this week, forcing drivers to rethink late-night and early-morning journeys through Rochdale, Stockport and Tameside.
The A58 Manchester Road in Rochdale will shut completely overnight, though exact times have not been released. Chapel Street East and the New Bailey Gateway works in the town centre switch to one-way traffic, so north-bound buses and cars will have to follow the revised loop.
Stockport adds a second pinch-point with Greek Street closed to all motors, pushing shoppers and delivery vans on to parallel side roads that are already narrowed by parked cars.
Further east, the second phase of the Castleton-to-Rochdale Active Travel Scheme is under way. The project, which has not yet published a detailed map, is meant to widen footways and add protected bike lanes, but traders on Milkstone Road say they still do not know which parking bays will disappear.
In Tameside, work around Mottram-in-Longdendale and Hollingworth is listed without a stated reason. With four boroughs affected at once, anyone crossing the M60 belt should allow extra time and check before starting engines after dark.
