Road alerts

Five separate schemes will reroute drivers, buses and cyclists across Greater Manchester for the next two months.

Overnight drivers in Rochdale face a week of detours as the A58 Manchester Road is shut between the town centre and Sudden while United Utilities replaces a sewer rising main. The closure runs from 8 pm to 5 am starting Monday and is expected to last five nights, forcing late-shift workers and delivery vans onto the parallel A664 through Smallbridge.

In the city centre, Chapel Street East has been narrowed to a single lane where the new Bailey Gateway office block is taking shape. Traffic already backs up to the Granada Studios junction during morning peaks, and council engineers warn the restriction will stay until the development's new junction is finished in late spring.

Stockport commuters are next in line: Greek Street, the link between the Merseyway car park and the A6, closes completely from 1 March for resurfacing and utility work. Buses serving the 330 and 358 routes will terminate at Warren Street, adding a six-minute walk for shoppers reaching the market precinct.

The second phase of the Castleton-to-Rochdale 'Active Travel' route begins next month, extending the protected cycle lane from Sudden to Dane Street. Crews will shift the carriageway edge by one metre, removing 27 on-street parking bays outside terraced houses; residents have been offered permits for a temporary site behind the Castleton Community Centre.

Finally, Tameside council will close the A628 Mottram Moor for three weekends in March while National Highways installs a new footbridge near the Hollingworth turning. The diversion runs via the A57 through Glossop, adding nine miles to journeys between Manchester and the M1.
