Greater Manchester Police praised the victim's bravery in coming forward in 2020, leading to Tewelde's arrest and conviction. The article also provides resources for victims of sexual abuse.
Amaniel Tewelde will spend the next 15 years behind bars after a Manchester court convicted him of raping a woman multiple times and subjecting her to years of coercive control that left her fearing for her life.
The 36-year-old Salford man, who met his victim in 2014, began his campaign of abuse with a serious sexual assault despite her pleas for him to stop. Manchester Minshull Street Court heard how Tewelde continued his pattern of violence, raping the woman on multiple occasions including during a trip to Blackpool that same year, while using threats and emotional manipulation to maintain his grip over her.
Throughout their relationship, Tewelde alternated between caring behavior and brutal control, telling the woman he would abandon her if she refused his sexual demands. The sustained abuse left her isolated and withdrawn, with no one close to confide in about her situation.
The victim’s nightmare finally ended when she came forward in September 2020, prompting a thorough investigation by Greater Manchester Police that led to Tewelde’s arrest and conviction on two counts of rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and perverting the course of justice. In addition to his prison sentence, he received a restraining order.
Detective Sergeant Graham Parry praised the victim’s courage, saying: “After years of suffering abuse at the hands of him, this woman was finally allowed a voice. She was listened to and got to tell her story in a court of law where justice could finally be served.”
