Proudly perched in Oldham: Help name the new Civic Centre peregrine chicks

Oldham Council is inviting residents to suggest names for three peregrine falcon chicks hatched on the Civic Centre building, with a chance to win a £50 Oldham Gift Card. The Mayor will select the winning names based on creativity and local spirit.

Three peregrine falcon chicks have hatched atop Oldham Civic Centre, and the town is racing to give them names before they learn to fly. The eyrie, discovered on the 13-storey tower, marks the first confirmed breeding of the world’s fastest bird inside the borough.

Council leaders opened a naming contest at noon today, dangling a £50 Oldham Gift Card for the resident whose suggestions impress Mayor Cllr Eddie Moores. “We’re thrilled to welcome these remarkable birds, and I’m inviting everyone in our community to join in the fun and help name our new feathered residents,” the mayor said. “I’ll be personally choosing the most fitting and creative names - so let your imagination soar!”

Entries close at midnight on Thursday 19 June; the winning trio of names will be revealed the following day. Peregrines, which can dive at 240 mph, have increasingly swapped coastal cliffs for city high-rises, and their choice of the Civic Centre has already drawn hundreds of excited comments on the I Love Oldham Facebook page. “Brilliant news!” wrote one resident; another posted simply, “Amazing!”
