Professor Brian Cox shares powerful message as he prepares for Oldham homecoming following Latics’ triumphant promotion

Professor Brian Cox, a lifelong Oldham Athletic fan, is preparing for a special visit to Oldham following the club's promotion to the English Football League. He will participate in the Great Horizons science events, inspiring students and educators, and meet with business leaders to promote STEM education.

Oldham’s double celebration continues as world-renowned physicist Professor Brian Cox returns to his hometown this week, fresh from cheering the Latics’ dramatic promotion at Wembley.

The University of Manchester professor, who watched Oldham Athletic’s 3-2 victory over Southend United in the National League play-off final, will share his passion for science with local students and educators during a two-day visit beginning July 1st. “For me, Oldham was a great place to grow up and a great place to watch football,” said Cox, a regular at Boundary Park during the club’s 1990s glory years. “At Wembley a couple of weeks ago it felt just like old times. Latics always left it to the last minute!”

Cox’s homecoming forms part of the Great Horizons initiative, designed to inspire and retain exceptional teaching talent across the borough. The celebrated scientist will address science teachers and leaders on July 1st, before hosting special assemblies for primary school pupils the following morning. His visit culminates with a Q&A session at Oldham Sixth Form College, where he aims to spark the same curiosity that drove him from Hulme Grammar School student to particle physics professor.

“That game was a powerful reminder that with belief and determination, anything is possible - and that is the message we want to deliver to the students in Oldham, studying science as I did all those years ago,” Cox explained. The visit also launches a 365-day business challenge to boost STEM education across Oldham, with the council hoping to capitalize on both the town’s footballing success and scientific heritage.
