PLT and Hirst return for Championship opener
Oldham Roughyeds prepare for their Championship opener against York Knights with a strong squad, including returning loan stars George Hirst and Phoenix Laulu-Togaga’e, but will miss key players like Mo Agoro and Jordan Turner due to injuries.
Oldham coach Sean Long has thrown Super League loanees George Hirst and Phoenix Laulu-Togaga’e straight into his 21-man squad for tomorrow’s Betfred Championship opener against York Knights at Boundary Park, but star winger Mo Agoro will sit out with the knock he picked up in last Sunday’s Challenge Cup victory over Barrow.
Long’s Roughyeds, promoted as League 1 champions last term and buoyed by that 26-18 cup win, begin their second-tier campaign against a Knights outfit coached by Mark Applegarth and tipped by many to challenge for the top six. Captain Jordan Turner is still unavailable with a hamstring problem, while Logan Astley, Adam Lawton, Brad Gallagher and McKenzie Yei continue their rehabilitation.
The full Oldham squad: Kieran Dixon, Iain Thornley, Danny Craven, Riley Dean, Gil Dudson, Matty Wildie, Owen Farnworth, Matty Ashurst, Adam Milner, Bailey Aldridge, Jay Chapelhow, Pat Moran, Elijah Taylor, Jumah Sambou, Ted Chapelhow, Jack Johnson, Lewis Baxter, Josh Drinkwater, Ben O’Keefe, plus Wigan loan prop Hirst and Hull KR utility back Laulu-Togaga’e.
