Paedophile sentenced for abusing teenage girls twenty years ago and committing a catalogue of crimes uncovered by detectives
Christopher Oates, a paedophile from Stockport, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for grooming, exploiting, and coercing two teenage girls into sex work in the early 2000s. The victims, aged 14 and 17 at the time, were subjected to violence, sexual abuse, and manipulation, including threats with a gun and drug coercion. Oates was arrested in 2023 after evading justice for years, including fleeing to Thailand and the Dominican Republic. The case was part of Operation Green Jacket, which investigates non-recent child sexual abuse in Manchester.
Stockport Predator Who Groomed Teen Girls into Sex Work Gets 13 Years
Christopher Oates, who groomed and coerced two teenage girls into sex work in Manchester two decades ago, was sentenced to 13 years in prison today at Manchester Crown Court. The 45-year-old from Tannock Road, Stockport, subjected vulnerable girls to a campaign of violence and sexual abuse, starting when one victim was just 14 years old.
The court heard how Oates provided the younger victim with a false sense of security, pretending to be her boyfriend while plying her with drugs and gifts. When she tried to leave, he dragged her down an alleyway, violently attacked her, and threatened her with a gun, stating: “You do as I say, you’re mine now.” In her victim impact statement, she wrote: “You groomed me, you put a gun to my head, and not only did you abuse me, but you let other men too.”
Detectives identified a second victim, aged 17, who knew Oates only by his nickname “Nails” due to his long fingernails. Both victims recalled being taken to a designated spot in central Manchester at least once a week for sex work, including one incident where they were recorded on video. Oates supplied them with cocaine and alcohol while pressuring them to take harder drugs, though they managed to escape.
The investigation revealed Oates fled to Thailand in 2012 after police discovered 130 indecent images of children on his mobile device. He was eventually arrested in November 2023 at a Stockport address where he was cultivating cannabis and possessing false identification documents. Oates pleaded guilty to multiple charges including sexual activity with children, inciting child prostitution, and firearm possession.
