Over 300 suspected domestic abusers arrested in a week in Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) reported over 300 arrests for domestic abuse offences in a week, highlighting their ongoing efforts to combat domestic violence. The force emphasized improvements in victim support, swift response times, and collaboration with partners to safeguard victims. Key actions included welfare checks, Clare’s Law disclosures, and community engagement. Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker acknowledged past shortcomings but stressed current progress, including faster emergency responses and specialized officer training. GMP encourages victims to come forward through various channels, including Live Chat, and assures serious action on all reports.

Greater Manchester Police Arrest 326 in Major Domestic Abuse Crackdown

Greater Manchester Police arrested 326 people for domestic abuse offences during a targeted week of action between 31 March and 6 April 2025, with over a third already resulting in positive outcomes for victims including charges or evidence-led prosecutions.

The force secured 30 Domestic Violence and Domestic Abuse Protection notices and orders while conducting 85 welfare checks on existing orders, dealing with four breaches. Officers also disclosed information to 59 people under Clare’s Law, enabling them to make informed decisions about potentially dangerous relationships.

Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker, lead for Protecting Vulnerable People, said the operation demonstrated significant improvements in the force’s response to domestic abuse over the past four years. “Our past response was simply not good enough, and let people down,” Parker acknowledged. “What was achieved last week is just a glimpse into the work which happens continuously behind the scenes to tackle domestic abuse and protect vulnerable victims across the region.”

The force has enhanced its response capabilities, answering 999 calls in an average of two seconds compared to 47 seconds in May 2021. Officers now reach emergency domestic abuse incidents in approximately eight minutes, with the force doubling overall arrests and making domestic abuse-related arrests accounting for nearly one-third of all arrests in the past year. Greater Manchester Police supported over 6,000 victims in obtaining justice against their abusers last year, marking a 32% increase from 2021.
