Operation Vulcan Officers Thwart Suspected Drug Driver After Police Ramming Incident in Derker
A teenager is in custody after a routine patrol turned into a dramatic confrontation on the streets of Derker.
The incident unfolded shortly before midnight on Monday, when plain-clothed officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Operation Vulcan - a specialist taskforce launched just three weeks ago - spotted a vehicle being driven erratically along a residential street.
When the unmarked patrol car illuminated its blue lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly accelerated directly into the police car in a bid to escape. The collision caused significant damage to both vehicles, but no officers were injured.
Following the impact, three occupants abandoned the silver hatchback and scattered across nearby gardens. Quick-thinking officers gave chase on foot, managing to detain one suspect within minutes. Two men remain outstanding as detectives continue door-to-door enquiries.
An 18-year-old local man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of multiple offences including possession of an offensive weapon, class B drug possession, driving without insurance, and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.
A search of the abandoned vehicle yielded concerning discoveries - officers recovered a baseball bat tucked beneath the passenger seat, an empty machete sheath in the footwell, and what is believed to be a quantity of cannabis. The car itself was seized for having no valid insurance.
Inspector Dan Cullum, who leads the Vulcan team, praised his officers’ rapid response: “This is precisely why we established Operation Vulcan - to disrupt exactly this type of criminal behaviour that’s been blighting our communities.”
Since its launch on March 3rd, the dedicated neighbourhood policing team has already executed 22 arrests, removed 13 vehicles linked to crime or anti-social behaviour, confiscated five weapons, and seized substantial quantities of controlled drugs across the Derker and surrounding areas.
Inspector Cullum added: “Criminals are quickly learning that Derker is no longer an easy target. We’re maintaining a highly visible presence 24/7, and we will pursue anyone who threatens our residents’ safety with the full force of the law.”
The arrested teenager has been released under investigation as forensic analysis continues. Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage to contact police via 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
