One of first charges brought for possession of a readily convertible firearm

A man named Sufiaan Ali has been charged with possession of a readily convertible firearm and drug-related offenses following a County Lines warrant in Oldham. This is one of the first charges under a new offense. Authorities are also conducting a national amnesty for certain Turkish-manufactured firearms, which must be surrendered by February 28, 2025.

An 18-year-old man appeared in court Friday charged under a new firearms law after police seized a Turkish-manufactured blank-firing pistol during a County Lines raid in Oldham.

Sufiaan Ali, of Hardy Street, was arrested Thursday when officers executed a warrant and allegedly found him with a Top Venting Blank Firer (TVBF) - weapons that became illegal under legislation that took effect this month. The 19-year-old faces additional counts of supplying Class B drugs, including THC and synthetic cannabinoids, and possessing criminal property.

Greater Manchester Police believe the case marks one of the first charges brought under the specific new offence covering readily convertible firearms. The arrest comes as forces nationwide participate in an amnesty to recover Turkish-made TVBF models including Retay, Ekol, Ceonic ISSC and Blow weapons, with owners having until 28 February to surrender them at police stations.
