Oldham welcomes new Mayor for 2025-26

Cllr Eddie Moores has been appointed as the new Mayor of Oldham for 2025-26, succeeding Cllr Zahid Chauhan. Moores, a long-serving councillor and former rail industry professional, will focus on fundraising for local charities and promoting community health and well-being during his term. Outgoing Mayor Chauhan was honored as an Honorary Freeman for his service.

Cllr Eddie Moores has been sworn in as Mayor of Oldham, succeeding Cllr Zahid Chauhan at a ceremony held Wednesday, 21 May 2025.

The Chadderton resident, first elected to represent Chadderton Central Ward in 2011 and later Chadderton North Ward after boundary changes in 2023, spent four decades in the rail industry before entering politics. After completing an engineering apprenticeship, he held supervisory, technical and management roles until retiring in 2010. He has served as Deputy Mayor for the past two years.

His wife Kath Moores assumes the role of Mayoress. Throughout his council service, Cllr Moores has held numerous positions including Cabinet Member for Children and governor roles at Mills Hill School, Blue Coat School, Radclyffe School and the Christie NHS Foundation Trust. He also serves as a director of the Cranmer Education Trust and trustee of several local organisations.

During his mayoral year, Cllr Moores will raise funds for the Children’s Ward at Royal Oldham Hospital, Positive Steps Oldham, MAHDLO and Foxdenton Hall restoration. His campaign will focus on health and wellbeing initiatives addressing mental health, smoking cessation, prostate cancer and dementia.

“It’s an absolute privilege to serve as the new Mayor of Oldham,” Cllr Moores said. “One of the greatest honours is to have the opportunity to work with local charities, which are very close to my heart, meaning all money raised will be kept in our borough for local people.”

The outgoing mayor, Cllr Chauhan, was appointed Honorary Freeman in recognition of his service. Former councillors Riaz Ahmad, John Hudson and Bernard Judge were also elected as Honorary Aldermen and Honorary Freeman.
