Oldham town centre Post Office closure: Council must explore all options, insists Sykes
Oldham Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Howard Sykes MBE has raised concerns about the impending closure of the Post Office at WH Smiths in Oldham town centre, urging the Council to explore alternatives to support residents, particularly older ones.
Oldham Post Office Closure Sparks Urgent Calls for Alternative
The impending closure of the Post Office at WH Smith in Oldham town centre has prompted Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Howard Sykes MBE to demand swift action from local authorities. The Shaw representative warned that the May 3 shutdown will particularly impact elderly residents who depend on the facility for essential services.
“A lot of people use the post office every week,” Councillor Sykes stated. “It’s a big loss to the town centre, especially for older residents.”
The veteran councillor urged the Council to immediately engage with high street retailers to establish temporary provisions, suggesting even a kiosk within another shop could help bridge the gap. “The Council must talk with the high street retailers to see what sort of temporary provision could be put in place even if it’s only a kiosk in another shop,” he emphasized.
Councillor Sykes also called on the Post Office to clarify its long-term strategy for maintaining services in Oldham town centre, as concerns mount about the accessibility of postal services for the community’s most vulnerable residents.
