Oldham RUFC Ladies faced Clitheroe in a thrilling match, with Oldham scoring multiple tries but ultimately losing 36-27. Captain Emma Procter and newcomer Mia Laithwaite were standout performers, while Charlotte Wilkinson earned Oldham’s Player of the Match. The team will next play Aldwinians on January 5.
Storm Darragh battered Silcock Park as Oldham RUFC Ladies opened their season against Clitheroe, falling 36-27 in a dramatic finish that saw the home side score two tries in the final minutes.
The visitors struck first when Meg Hobin crossed the try line after Oldham’s dominant scrum capitalized on a Clitheroe knock-on just two minutes into the match. The home side answered back following an Oldham handling error, but newcomer Mia Laithwaite restored the lead with her first-ever try after excellent defensive work from centers Megan Farnhill and Charlotte Wilkinson, who stepped into the position due to last-minute illness.
Captain Emma Procter powered through the defense for Oldham’s third try, giving the visitors a 15-17 advantage at the break. The second half saw Procter complete her brace and convert her own try, while Farnhill added another score after cutting back around the defense.
With the score level at 27-27 entering the final minutes, Clitheroe’s back line broke through for a converted try under the sticks, then exploited a gap in Oldham’s defense moments later to seal victory. Clitheroe awarded their Player of the Match to Procter, while Oldham honored Wilkinson for her performance.
The Oldham Ladies return to action January 5 when they host Aldwinians at Manor Park following the Christmas break.
