Oldham RU defeated in penultimate fixture of the campaign
Oldham RUFC were defeated 34-27 by Tyldesley in their penultimate fixture of the season, despite a spirited performance and notable contributions from several players.
Tyldesley edged a 34-27 thriller at Manor Park to dent Oldham RUFC’s survival hopes and leave the hosts still waiting for a first win since December.
The visitors struck first through a penalty and converted try after an Oldham defensive lapse, but Stuart Brennan’s power try and Alex Jobson’s penalty had the scores at 10-8 before Tyldesley stretched it to 15-8 at the break.
Oldham lost Ross Cooper to the sin-bin and then Alex Jobson to a red for a high tackle early in the second half; Tyldesley immediately exploited the 13-man hosts with a converted try for 22-8.
Tries from Phil Conroy and skipper Nick Hackman, both created by Rob Froggatt, brought Oldham within two at 22-20, and when Froggatt barged over and converted his own score it was 29-27 with ten minutes left.
Tyldesley’s pack then squeezed four consecutive penalties out of the tiring home side and crossed again to seal the bonus-point win, leaving Oldham with two consolation bonus points that lift them one point above Hoylake at the bottom.
Tom Davies earned man-of-the-match honours for Oldham for a defensive shift that produced several crucial turnovers, while Froggatt, Jordan McEwan, Jack Taylor, Hackman and Brennan also caught the eye on a day when former players watched another narrow defeat slip away.
