Oldham gym group 'The Legends' helps over-55s transform health
A group of over-55s in Derker are proving that age is just a number when it comes to fitness. The Legends, who meet twice weekly at CrossFit OL1, have overcome cancer, heart attacks, and major surgeries to transform their health and wellbeing.
John Roberts, 69, credits the group with saving his life during a decade-long battle with cancer. 'When I got diagnosed at 60, I didn't expect to see my 70th,' he says. 'It's been a godsend to me personally.
The group includes 82-year-old Irene Lorenzelli, who regained enough strength after double knee replacements to travel to Australia and Hawaii. 'I'm fitter now at 82 than I was 25 years ago,' she says.
Led by coach Angie Thewlis, the workouts focus on everyday movements and can be adapted for each person's abilities. Members report reduced medication, improved mental health, and a strong sense of community.
The group recently participated in the CrossFit Open alongside younger members, inspiring the next generation. 'Just because you're over 60 doesn't mean you have to stop training,' says gym owner Danielle Hartley Touil.
