Oldham considers introducing new bin charge
Oldham Council is considering introducing a £10 charge for replacement recycling bins (brown, blue, and green) to help address a £14m budget shortfall, while keeping grey bin replacement fees unchanged at £35. A final decision has been delayed for further consideration.
Oldham residents may soon pay £10 every time they need a new recycling bin, as the council scrambles to close a £14 million budget gap.
Town-hall chiefs are weighing a first-time levy on replacement brown bins for glass, plastic and tins; blue bins for paper and card; and green bins for garden and food waste. Grey bins for general refuse would keep their existing £35 replacement fee. Officers believe the move could deter needless requests and save the cash-strapped authority up to £90,000 a year.
A decision due this week was postponed to allow further scrutiny, meaning households face weeks of uncertainty before the exact charge is set. Oldham has ruled out following neighbouring councils that bill for routine collections, insisting only bulky-item removals will carry a fee.
