New women-only gym opens in Chadderton

The Chadderton Wellbeing Centre has opened a new women-only gym space, featuring cardio and strength training equipment, following the popularity of Women’s Wednesdays. The initiative aims to encourage more women in the community to lead active, healthier lives.

Chadderton Wellbeing Centre has opened a women-only gym, creating a private workout space equipped with full cardio and strength training equipment on the ground floor of the Burnley Street facility.

The dedicated area, staffed entirely by women, joins existing gym and studio facilities at the centre and responds to demand following successful Women’s Wednesdays, which already offer female-only access to swimming, sauna, aquasise and group fitness classes including aerobics, body pump and Zumba every Wednesday morning.

“The space was formerly used as a spin studio,” explained Stuart Lockwood, Chief Executive of Oldham Active, the charity operating leisure facilities across the borough. “But following the success of Women’s Wednesdays, we have taken the decision to invest in a dedicated gym space exclusively for women, minimum 16 years old, to encourage more women in the local community to lead active, healthier lives. The feedback we had was that some women do prefer to exercise in women-only spaces and our women-only swimming sessions were already popular.”

Public Health Director Rebecca Fletcher tested equipment at Wednesday’s launch event, joined by Cllr Peter Dean, Cabinet Member for Thriving Communities and Culture, Deputy Mayor Eddie Moores and councillors Mohon Ali and Mohammed Nazrul Islam. The women-only gym operates Monday to Friday 6.30am-9pm and weekends 8am-5pm, with membership information available at oldhamactive.co.uk or by calling 0161 207 7000.
