New images of Failsworth ‘charging oasis’ released
CGI images reveal plans for a £4m electric vehicle charging site in Failsworth, featuring 12 ultra-rapid charging bays, a Caffè Nero Express, and green design elements. The project aims to revitalize the area and support local businesses.
Construction has begun on a £4 million electric vehicle charging site at the abandoned petrol station on the corner of Reliance Street and Oldham Road in Failsworth, transforming the derelict landmark into what developers call a ‘charging oasis’.
The circular-designed facility will feature 12 ultra-rapid charging bays capable of delivering up to 300kW, allowing drivers to add 325 miles of range in just 20 minutes. Four additional waiting bays and a Caffè Nero Express will accommodate motorists when all chargers are occupied, while extensive greenery and green road markings will distinguish the site from traditional petrol stations.
Be.EV, the developer behind the project, chose the location which sees 26,000 commuters daily and serves 1,242 registered electric vehicles in the immediate area. The company projects the scheme could increase spending at local businesses by three percent while revitalising what has been a derelict site for 15 years.
“This once-derelict site is set to become a key transport feature of the community - a thriving hub buzzing with activity,” said Asif Ghafoor, Be.EV’s CEO. “By breathing new life into this space, we’re not just revitalising the area - we’re paving the way for cleaner, greener streets.”
The former petrol station underwent intensive decontamination to become the first site of its kind re-certified by Manchester City Council for clean energy use. The development forms part of the broader ‘Northern Gateway’ initiative aimed at regenerating underdeveloped areas across north Manchester and the borders of Oldham, Rochdale and Bury through new employment opportunities, housing and infrastructure projects.
