New bins to include QR codes in bid to make recycling easier

Oldham Council is introducing QR codes on household bins to simplify recycling and waste management for residents. The QR codes will link to the council's rubbish and recycling webpage, allowing users to report missed collections, check bin schedules, and request assisted collections. The initiative aims to make the process more convenient and efficient, with the new bins expected to appear later this year.

Oldham Council will roll out new household bins featuring QR codes later this year, allowing residents to instantly access bin-related services through their smartphones.

The codes, printed on the front of each bin, will connect directly to the council’s rubbish and recycling webpage. Residents can scan them to report missed collections, check which items go in each bin, view collection schedules or request assisted collections.

Councillor Elaine Taylor, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “This is a small but practical change that will make a real difference. Most people have smartphones these days, so adding a QR code means residents can get straight to the right page without having to search for it. It’s all about making things simpler and more convenient for our residents.”

The council is finalising its order with the new bin supplier, and the first QR-coded bins will begin appearing on borough streets before the year ends.
