Murder Investigation Launched After New Year’s Day Fatal Stabbing in Rochdale
A 38-year-old man died from knife wounds and a 30-year-old man remains hospitalized with serious injuries following a disturbance on Sussex Street in Rochdale at approximately 2:30am on Wednesday, 1 January 2025.
Emergency services responded to reports of a severe knife wound but were unable to save the older victim, whose family has been notified of his death. The younger victim is in stable condition at hospital, though the extent of his injuries remains unknown.
Greater Manchester Police have launched a murder investigation into what they believe was an isolated and targeted attack involving two individuals. Crime scenes remain active on Sussex Street and nearby Essex Street while detectives continue their enquiries.
Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Jones stated: “Following developments overnight we have launched a murder investigation after the sad loss of life on New Year’s Day. My sincere condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. Whilst no formal arrests have been made as yet, we are not currently seeking anyone else in connection with this incident.”
Police emphasize there is no wider threat to the community, though officers will maintain a visible presence in the area. Authorities are appealing for witnesses and anyone with video footage from doorbells, dashcams, CCTV, or mobile phones that may have captured the incident or events surrounding it.
