Met Office says temperature set to dip below freezing in Greater Manchester in cold snap following Storm Claudia

The Met Office forecasts a cold snap in Greater Manchester, with temperatures dropping below freezing following Storm Claudia. The cold snap is expected to bring snow and ice, with temperatures potentially dropping to -3°C by Thursday. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a Yellow cold health alert for the region, warning of potential impacts on health services, including increased mortality among vulnerable populations. However, the likelihood of severe consequences is considered low.

Met Office Warns of Freezing Temperatures in Greater Manchester Following Storm Claudia

Temperatures are set to plummet across Greater Manchester this week, with the Met Office forecasting conditions to dip below freezing as the region recovers from the impact of Storm Claudia.

The storm, which brought strong winds and heavy rain to the area on Friday and Saturday, has now moved south, making way for a cold snap that is expected to bring snow and ice to some parts of the UK.

Coldest Night Since March
Sunday night (November 16) was recorded as the coldest in the UK since March 20 this year, with temperatures falling to minus seven degrees Celsius in Tulloch Bridge, Scotland.

Health Alert Issued
Although no weather warnings have been issued for Greater Manchester, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a Yellow cold-health alert covering the North West, including Greater Manchester. The alert, which will be in force from 8am on Monday, November 17, to 8am on Friday, November 21, warns of possible significant impacts across health and social care services.

These impacts include a potential rise in deaths—particularly among those aged 65 and over or with pre-existing health conditions—increased demand for remote healthcare services, and challenges in maintaining recommended indoor temperatures of 18°C.

Forecast for the Week Ahead
According to the Met Office, temperatures in Greater Manchester could drop to 2C on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with lows of minus one degree on Wednesday and minus three degrees on Thursday. Temperatures could be as low as 1C on Friday.

The Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist, Dan Holley, explained:
“As Storm Claudia retreats southward, high pressure to the north-west will drive a cold northerly flow from the Arctic across the UK. This will bring much colder conditions than of late and, whilst generally drier than recent days, there will also be a risk of wintry hazards, such as snow and ice. This will be a notable change in our weather after a prolonged spell of above-average temperatures.”
