Man who took videos and boasted about driving dangerously sentenced to 12 years behind bars

Caleb Mansfield-Marr, a 21-year-old from Blackburn, Lancashire, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for causing death by dangerous driving, among other charges, after a fatal collision in Bredbury. The incident occurred when Mansfield-Marr, driving at 64mph in a 30mph zone, collided with a car turning right, resulting in the death of 76-year-old Jack Howe and serious injuries to his wife. Mansfield-Marr had a history of dangerous driving offenses, including speeding and driving without insurance or a valid license. Police uncovered videos of him driving recklessly, including one where he was speeding with his feet out of the window.

A disqualified driver who sped through a Stockport junction at more than double the limit, killing a 76-year-old grandfather and gravely injuring his wife of 50 years, was jailed for 12 years at Manchester Crown Court yesterday.

Caleb Mansfield-Marr, 22, ploughed into Jack and Maureen Howe’s Toyota on Ashton Road, Bredbury, at 64 mph in a 30 mph zone while overtaking a line of traffic on 5 August 2023. Mr Howe died seven weeks later; Mrs Howe, 74, spent weeks in hospital with life-changing injuries.

Witnesses told police Mansfield-Marr had been weaving through traffic and undertaking before he struck the couple’s car as it turned right into Lingard Lane. Bystanders fought to save Mr Howe with first-aid until paramedics arrived, but he succumbed to his injuries on 25 September.

Mansfield-Marr, of Blackburn, admitted causing death by dangerous driving, causing death while disqualified and uninsured, and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving while banned. The court heard he had never held a full licence and was still disqualified after a string of earlier offences, including a November 2021 speed offence at 71 mph in a 60 mph zone, motorway speeding in May 2022, and a September 2022 crash in which he failed to stop.

Police recovered mobile-phone videos showing Mansfield-Marr steering at 80 mph on a motorway with his feet propped on the dashboard. “This is a dangerous man who believes the rules… do not apply to him,” said Sgt Louise Warhurst of Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit. “Even disqualification did not deter him.”

Mrs Howe, paying tribute, said: “The morning of 25 September 2023 changed my life forever, I became a widow… Nothing can heal my loss of losing Jack, my husband and my best friend.”
