Man sentenced to life imprisonment following a campaign of abuse against a woman

Ryan Schofield of Ashton-under-Lyne has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 13 years for multiple offences including threats to kill, assault, rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and false imprisonment. The case highlights GMP's efforts to tackle domestic and sexual violence, with increased rape case outcomes and a reduction in domestic abuse offences. The victim's bravery was commended, and support services for survivors were promoted.

A 34-year-old man who met his victim online before subjecting her to months of physical and sexual abuse will serve at least 13 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges at Bolton Crown Court.

Ryan Schofield, of Whiteacre Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, received a life sentence Thursday after admitting to threats to kill, assault, rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and false imprisonment. The court heard how Schofield befriended his victim through online platforms before launching a campaign of horrific abuse between March and October 2022.

Police initially arrested Schofield for breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order, but investigators discovered evidence of the abuse on his mobile phone. The footage revealed the extent of his crimes, which included multiple incidents of rape, assault, and false imprisonment.

Detective Constable Chris Doran of the Tameside Challenger Team praised the victim’s courage in coming forward. “I cannot begin to imagine her pain and suffering but hope she finds solace in the sentence this monster was handed today,” Doran said. “Greater Manchester Police take domestic violence and sexual offences very seriously and I would like to highlight this case as an example of this. If you are a victim of domestic or sexual offences you will be heard.”
