Epsom Man Jailed for Child Sex Offences

A 76-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 months in prison after admitting to sexually abusing a teenage girl.

Tony Drewitt, of Hazon Way, Epsom, Surrey, appeared at Manchester Crown Square Court where he pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual activity with a child.

The court heard that Drewitt, then aged 69, began grooming the victim when she was just 13 years old. Over the course of a year, while the girl was 14, he engaged in sexual activity with her. Some of the offences took place in Oldham.

In addition to his prison sentence, Drewitt was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for five years and is subject to an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim.

Detective Sergeant Andy Barrett from the Oldham Complex Safeguarding Hub praised the courage of the victim and her family in coming forward to report the abuse.

“Drewitt engaged in a prolonged period of grooming a young girl who should have been free to enjoy her childhood,” he said. “Instead, she was abused by a man who denied her of her youth.”

He added: “I hope today’s sentencing can provide the victim and their family some comfort knowing that Drewitt is behind bars and can no longer harm them.”

Greater Manchester Police urged anyone who has experienced sexual assault, or knows someone who has, to come forward. Reports can be made by calling 101, using the Live Chat function on the GMP website, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
