Man jailed following 'cowardly' assault on night out in Oldham

Oldham Man Jailed for Seven Years After Brutal Town Centre Attack

Sebastian Jones launched a vicious assault on a 41-year-old man in Oldham town centre around 4am on July 15, following a night out. CCTV footage captured Jones leaving a nightclub before doubling back to confront his victim, punching him to the ground and continuing the attack as the man lay defenceless.

Emergency services found the victim on the floor with serious head injuries after members of the public called police. Though he initially left the scene and returned home, his condition deteriorated and he was admitted to hospital in critical condition later that day.

Police executed a warrant at Jones’s Dickens Street address, but the 37-year-old evaded capture, prompting a week-long manhunt. He was eventually arrested in Bury and charged with S18 assault, before being remanded in custody.

Following a three-day trial at Manchester Crown Court concluding in January 2025, Jones was found guilty and sentenced to seven years imprisonment this week. Detective Superintendent Walker from GMP’s Oldham district condemned the attack: “The level of violence displayed by Jones was completely unacceptable and cowardly. The victim was defenceless on the ground, and Jones carried out a sustained attack, causing significant injuries which have left a lasting impact on the victim and his family. Greater Manchester Police will not tolerate any form of violence. After the savage assault, he actively evaded police and showed no remorse for his actions. He is now rightly facing the consequences of his behaviour.”
