Man jailed after committing sexual offences against women after a night out in Bolton

Tyler Smith was sentenced to five years and five months in jail after pleading guilty to sexual assault and rape following an incident in Bolton where he targeted three women after a night out. The assaults occurred despite clear non-consent from the victims, and Smith's actions were partially captured on mobile phone footage. The police praised the bravery of the victims and urged others to come forward with similar experiences.

Tyler Smith, 24, will spend five years and five months behind bars after raping a woman he had met only hours earlier during a night out in Farnworth, Bolton last summer.

The assault unfolded in the early hours of 16 July 2023 after Smith joined three women at a pub and accompanied them to a nearby house. Once inside, he began making unwanted advances toward one woman, ignoring her demands that he stop touching her. She left in a taxi, and a second woman went to sleep in a bedroom, leaving the third victim alone with Smith.

When the final woman tried to call a taxi to leave, Smith cornered her in the kitchen, forced kisses on her and pinned her against her will, insisting “he knows that she wants him.” Despite her repeated pleas to stop, he raped her. The victim woke her sleeping friend and together they ordered Smith out of the property; mobile-phone footage captured his ensuing rage.

Smith, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to sexual assault and rape at Minshull Street Crown Court on Monday and must register as a sex offender for life. Detective Constable Jon Liversage praised the victims’ bravery, noting that Smith “continued to deny his actions throughout his interviews” until their evidence secured the conviction.
