Man jailed after assaulting man on night out
Sebastian Jones was sentenced to seven years in prison for a violent assault on a 41-year-old man in Oldham town centre. The attack occurred in July 2024, leaving the victim with serious head injuries. Jones evaded police for seven days before being arrested in Bury. He was found guilty after a three-day trial in January 2025.
Sebastian Jones launched an unprovoked assault on a 41-year-old man in Oldham town centre around 4am on 15 July, leaving his victim critically injured and later sentenced to seven years in prison.
CCTV footage shows Jones leaving a nightclub before doubling back to confront the man, punching him to the ground and continuing the assault as the victim lay defenceless. Bystanders called emergency services, who found the man suffering serious head injuries. Though he initially returned home, he was later admitted to hospital in critical condition.
Police executed a warrant at Jones’s Dickens Street address, but the 36-year-old evaded capture for seven days until officers arrested him in Bury, Greater Manchester. He was charged with Section 18 assault and remanded in custody.
Following a three-day trial at Manchester Crown Court that concluded in January 2025, Jones was found guilty and sentenced this week. Detective Superintendent Walker from Oldham district condemned the attack: “The level of violence displayed by Jones was completely unacceptable and cowardly. The victim was defenceless on the ground, and Jones carried out a sustained attack, causing significant injuries which have left a lasting impact on the victim and his family. Greater Manchester Police will not tolerate any form of violence. After the savage assault, he actively evaded police and showed no remorse for his actions. He is now rightly facing the consequences of his behaviour.”
