Man arrested and drugs and weapons seized following police pursuit in Oldham
A 19-year-old man was arrested in Oldham after a high-speed police pursuit involving a stolen car. The suspect drove dangerously, including going the wrong way on a motorway, before crashing. Police recovered a machete and drugs from the scene. The man faces charges related to vehicle theft, possession of a bladed article, and drug possession.
A 19-year-old man is in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase through Oldham in a stolen car, culminating in a dangerous wrong-way drive onto the A627(M) and the recovery of a machete and drugs.
The pursuit began shortly before 10:30pm Sunday when officers spotted the suspected stolen vehicle from Delph. The driver immediately accelerated to escape, prompting specially trained Roads Policing Unit officers to authorize a pursuit.
The situation escalated dramatically when the fleeing vehicle entered a no-entry lane on the A627(M), racing against oncoming traffic at speeds exceeding 100mph. The car eventually crashed into roadside railings, after which the driver attempted to flee on foot. Officers recovered a machete believed discarded during the foot chase and found drugs inside the vehicle.
“This latest arrest is a prime example of the work we are doing on a daily basis to trace stolen cars and remove drugs and weapons from our streets,” said Inspector Jamie Buchanan of the Roads Policing Unit. “The driver showed a blatant disregard for members of the public, reaching speeds of over 100mph, and even driving the wrong way on a busy roundabout. Thankfully, no members of the public were injured, but without the quick-thinking actions of the officers involved, this could’ve ended very differently.”
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle, possession of a bladed article, and possession of drugs, and remains in police custody for questioning.
