Look and feel every month - Oldham woman stars in new a new breast cancer campaign

An Oldham woman, Lynn Tillington, features in a new NHS campaign promoting breast cancer awareness, specifically encouraging monthly self-checks. The campaign targets groups that delay seeking medical advice, including women aged 40-50, women over 71, and women from ethnic minorities. It highlights local landmarks and uses local figures to foster community engagement.

Lynn Tissington stands among the autumn leaves at Tandle Hill Park in Royton, her image now plastered across Greater Manchester as the face of a new NHS drive urging people to “look and feel” their breasts or chest every month.

The 77-year-old Oldham woman is one of dozens of local residents featured in the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance campaign launched for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Billboards, social media feeds and community posters pair her photograph with city landmarks including Central Library and the Imperial War Museum to hammer home one message: early detection saves lives.

“I wanted to get involved because I know it’s important to check your breasts regularly and I volunteer in Maggie’s Oldham, a cancer care centre,” Tissington said. “I’m encouraging everyone in Greater Manchester - particularly older women like me - to look and feel every month.”

Recent data show women aged 40-50, those over 71 and women from ethnic minorities wait longest before seeing a GP about possible symptoms. Dr Clare Garnsey, clinical lead for breast cancer at the alliance, said survival rates soar when the disease is caught quickly: “Your GP wants to hear about any changes.”
