Local Leaders Celebrate Oldham's Community Bike Libraries

Local leaders, including Mayor Andy Burnham and Oldham Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah, visited the Failsworth Bike Library to celebrate community-led initiatives that promote cycling. The event highlighted the role of volunteers and the accessibility of bike libraries in encouraging residents to cycle, connecting communities, and improving wellbeing.

Failsworth celebrated its community cycling champions on Wednesday as civic leaders gathered at the Failsworth Bike Library to recognize volunteers who keep wheels turning across Oldham.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham, Active Travel Commissioner Dame Sarah Storey, and Oldham Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah met with volunteers from Moston Cycle Club who run the bike library alongside Transport for Greater Manchester. The visit highlighted how grassroots initiatives connect neighborhoods and boost wellbeing through pedal power.

“We’re committed to supporting safe, sustainable travel and making cycling easier for everyone in Oldham,” Cllr Shah told attendees. “The Bike Library programme is a fantastic way for people to give cycling a try, helping them get around more easily and bringing our community closer together. By teaming up with local groups, we’re making sure cycling is accessible to everyone in Oldham.”

The Failsworth location joins three other bike libraries across the borough where residents can borrow bicycles like library books. Positive Cycles in OL1 1DJ, Ghazali Trust in OL4 1FN, GROWE at M35 0LE, and Yuvanis Foundation in OL9 6JN all operate under the same volunteer-driven model that has become central to Oldham’s cycling movement.
