LIVE: People warned 'keep windows shut' as firefighters descend on Greater Manchester street - latest updates

Emergency services are responding to a suspected chemical leak on Wellington Road in Greenfield, Saddleworth, with multiple fire engines and hazmat teams in attendance. Residents are advised to keep windows and doors shut, and road closures are in place. No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the incident is under investigation.

Greenfield, Saddleworth - Firefighters in hazmat suits entered an industrial building on Wellington Road on Sunday morning after smoke believed to contain chemicals billowed from the premises.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service mobilised engines from Oldham, Stalybridge and Mossley just after 10 a.m. on 27 July. Crews wearing breathing apparatus are inside the structure working to identify the source of the fumes, while a police cordon seals off the street and several surrounding roads.

“Residents nearby are advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution,” the fire service said. “Road closures are also in place.”

Greater Manchester Police confirmed the incident is being treated as a hazardous-materials event. “Investigators are working to determine the cause,” a force spokesperson said. “There have been no reported injuries and everyone at the business premises has been accounted for.”
