'Lender' screamed 'you owe me f*****g money' at alleged murder victim after he was 'kidnapped' and attacked, jury told

A court case details how a money lender, Jemma Marshall, and her associate, Jason Wadsworth, are accused of murdering Martin Shaw after he allegedly failed to repay a debt. The prosecution claims Shaw was kidnapped, assaulted, and subsequently died from his injuries. Both defendants deny the charges, with the trial ongoing at Manchester Crown Court.

A money lender screamed “you owe me f***ing money” at a man who had been kidnapped and beaten in the back of her car, a jury heard today.

Jemma Marshall, 37, allegedly recruited Jason Wadsworth, also 37, as her enforcer to collect a debt from 45-year-old Martin Shaw, Manchester Crown Court was told. Both defendants deny murder and manslaughter charges related to Shaw’s death.

The court heard Shaw was forcefully placed into Marshall’s Audi A3 while walking along Ashton Road in Oldham around 9:30 pm on September 10, 2023. Prosecutors say the pair drove him around town for 15 minutes while repeatedly assaulting him, with Marshall complaining: “Look at all this blood you are getting all over my car.”

After being returned home with his face “covered in blood,” Shaw was hospitalized when he fell ill. He died 55 days later from liver failure after being placed in an induced coma for life-threatening spleen injuries and damaged ribs.

The jury heard Shaw, who received £1,000 monthly in benefits, had told a housing support worker he owed £2,000 in drug debts. A friend claimed Marshall would “massively inflate” debts when Shaw borrowed from her.

In police interviews, Marshall claimed they met Shaw by chance while getting food and gave him a lift home. Wadsworth said they were “looking for drugs” when they encountered Shaw, admitting he gave Shaw a “backhander” but insisted Marshall was the one screaming about owed money while Shaw pleaded “I’ll pay, I’ll pay.”

The trial continues.
