Stockton Town 2-0 Oldham Athletic

Stockton Town, Northern Premier League strugglers, dumped an under-strength Oldham Athletic out of the FA Trophy with a commanding 2-0 victory at the Coverdale Road ground on Tuesday night.

The Teessiders seized control in the 53rd minute when centre-back Adam Nicholson climbed above static defenders to head home from a corner. Oldham, fielding a shadow side, rarely threatened an equaliser and the tie was sealed in the 89th minute as substitute Michael Sweet forced the ball over the line from close range.

Manager Micky Mellon made no attempt to disguise his priorities. “We said before we came up here this (the FA Trophy) is never going to be what we want to be heavily involved in,” he admitted. “That doesn’t mean that we didn’t want to come up here and get a result, but it is what it is.”

Attention now turns back to the National League, where Oldham host Wealdstone on Saturday needing points to climb the table after this cup humiliation.
