Highlighting the support available for survivors of sexual assault and abuse
Oldham residents who have experienced rape, sexual assault or abuse can now seek free, round-the-clock help without first speaking to police, as the NHS launches a fresh push to raise awareness of Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs).
Many survivors stay silent because they believe reporting to officers is the only route to care; the campaign stresses that Saint Mary's SARC, which covers Greater Manchester, will treat and support people even if they never give a statement.
Staff at the Manchester centre can offer crisis care, forensic examinations, emergency contraception, STI tests, counselling and mental-health referrals, and will guide each visitor through every option so they decide what happens next.
Support is open to men, women and children whether the assault happened days or decades ago, and appointments can be made by calling 0161 276 6515 or following the step-by-step guide on the Saint Mary's website.
Nationally, SARCs operate 24 hours a day, yet uptake remains low; health bosses hope that by spreading word locally they can shorten the time Oldham people spend unsure of where to turn.
