Hard work pays off: Oldham wins LGC Most Improved Council Award!

Oldham Council has won the LGC Most Improved Council Award 2025, recognising its transformation and progress through leadership, culture, and better outcomes. The award was celebrated by Cllr Arooj Shah and Chief Executive Shelley Kipling, who credited staff, councillors, and residents for their contributions.

Oldham Council has claimed the title of Most Improved Council at the Local Government Chronicle Awards 2025, beating heavyweight authorities including Croydon, Sheffield and Liverpool to the national prize.

The council, shortlisted in February and interviewed by judges in March, received the award for driving major improvements through stronger leadership, cultural change and better outcomes for residents. Leader Cllr Arooj Shah hailed the win as testament to the town’s collective effort: “This award means a lot to Oldham. It’s a real credit to our staff, our councillors, and most importantly, our residents, who’ve stuck with us and helped shape our progress. We’ve been honest about the challenges we’ve faced, and this shows we’re heading in the right direction. Today we take a moment to be proud.”

Chief Executive Shelley Kipling said the recognition belongs to every employee pushing for change: “This award recognises the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in driving change in Oldham. It’s a great boost for the council but we’ll keep pushing to make sure our services get better for all our residents.”

The LGC Awards ceremony celebrates achievements of local authorities across England, with Oldham’s victory marking a significant milestone in the council’s transformation journey.
