Oldham RU secured a narrow 20-18 victory against high-flying Southport in a hard-fought home game, marked by strong defensive efforts and key plays from players like Louis Fitton and Sean Carter.
Oldham 20-18 Southport
Oldham stunned third-placed Southport with a dramatic 20-18 victory at Manor Park on Saturday, securing their first home win of 2025 in a match that turned on Sean Carter’s decisive line-out steal in the dying seconds.
The hosts, beaten heavily in the reverse fixture earlier this season, trailed 18-13 with 15 minutes remaining after two yellow cards had reduced them to 13 men. Louis Fitton’s second try, converted by Alex Jobson, nudged Oldham ahead before Carter snatched Southport’s final line-out to spark wild celebrations.
Fitton had opened the scoring in the first half, finishing a move that began with Jack Taylor’s powerful carries and went through Rhys Jones, with Jobson’s conversion making it 10-3. Southport responded before the break to trail 10-8.
The visitors seized control after half-time as Jobson and Tom Davies received yellow cards. Two unconverted tries put Southport 18-10 ahead before Jobson’s penalty set up the dramatic finale.
“It was a real team performance where any of the 18 players could have been awarded Man of the match,” said coaches, though Carter’s all-round display and crucial intervention earned him the nod ahead of Fitton’s brace.
