Grit and determination pays off as Kenika earns top Oldham business appointment

Kenika Gumbs has been appointed as the new Marketing Manager at Hill’s Panel Products (HPP), an Oldham-based KBB manufacturer. Her journey includes overcoming homelessness and multiple rejections after moving from Anguilla to the UK, eventually earning multiple degrees in business and digital marketing. She credits mentorship at HPP and personal resilience for her success, and the company praises her determination and talent.

Kenika Gumbs has been promoted to Marketing Manager at Hill’s Panel Products, marking a dramatic turnaround for the Anguilla-born professional who once found herself homeless on the streets of Britain.

The elevation from Assistant Marketing Manager at the Oldham-based kitchen and bedroom furniture manufacturer caps a remarkable journey that began with the death of her mother when she was just five years old. Raised by her grandmother on the small Caribbean island, Gumbs arrived in the UK in 2014 with dreams of building a better life, only to face rejection after rejection.

“I moved to the UK with big dreams and a hopeful heart in 2014, only to find myself sleeping on the streets shortly after,” Gumbs recalled. “By 2016, I had hit rock bottom - completely homeless, completely broken, and nearly gave up on everything. But I told my grandmother, ‘I know my purpose. I can’t come back home. I’m here for a reason.’”

After working multiple part-time jobs while pursuing her education, Gumbs earned a foundation degree in business management from Teesside University, a bachelor’s degree from the University of Bedfordshire, and a master’s degree in digital marketing from Salford University. She joined HPP two years ago, where Marketing and Business Development Director Dan Mounsey mentored her development.

“I love working at HPP,” Gumbs said. “From the moment I came here, it’s been like being part of one big family, and that’s very important to me and what I want from my job. Thank you to Dan, and everyone at HPP, for listening to my ideas, for letting me be me and for never asking me to shrink, change or fit in.”

Mounsey praised the appointment, saying, “I am delighted for Kenika - hers is such an inspiring story and shows what you can achieve with sheer grit and determination combined with talent and a love for your work. I’m sure this is only the beginning for Kenika.”
