Greater Manchester welcomes tens of thousands ahead of the Manchester Marathon this weekend

Tens of thousands of runners and spectators will descend on Greater Manchester for the Manchester Marathon on 19 April, with extensive road closures, enhanced policing and pop-up safety stands aimed at keeping the event safe and vibrant.

Greater Manchester is preparing to welcome tens of thousands of runners and spectators this weekend as the Manchester Marathon returns on Sunday 19 April.

The event provides an opportunity for people from across the country to come together, raise money for their chosen charities and enjoy the sights that make Greater Manchester unique.

The marathon is expected to attract large crowds along the route, resulting in increased footfall across several districts.

Runners will pass through key locations including Deansgate, Sale, Altrincham and Chorlton, with local residents, entertainment and designated cheer zones helping to create a vibrant atmosphere throughout the day.

Greater Manchester Police will be working closely with event organisers, local authorities and partner organisations to ensure the event runs smoothly and safely for everyone involved.

A number of road closures will be in place along and around the marathon route. Officers, PCSOs and event stewards will be positioned throughout the area to provide assistance, manage traffic disruption and maintain public safety.

Alongside supporting runners on the course, GMP will be hosting pop-up engagement stands in Altrincham and on Oxford Road.

Members of the public will be able to speak with officers, collect information on staying safe at large events and learn how to report behaviour that may be concerning or feel out of place.

This forms part of our ongoing commitment to tackling violence against women and girls and ensuring people have the information they need to feel confident reporting anything that doesn’t feel right.

Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker, Gold Commander for the event, said: “We’re looking forward to supporting the return of the Manchester Marathon this Sunday, which brings together communities, athletes and visitors from across the country.

“Our priority is to ensure everyone can enjoy the event safely, whether they’re running, spectating or travelling through the area.

“By staying aware of your surroundings and following safety advice, everyone can help make this year’s marathon a positive and memorable experience.

“Our role is about maintaining a visible presence and offering reassurance. If anyone sees anything that doesn’t feel right, please speak to an officer on duty or contact us via 999, 101 or the Live Chat function on our website.”

Detective Superintendent Phil Key, GMP lead for Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) said: “Large public events should be spaces where everyone feels safe and supported. Our officers will be out in communities throughout the day to provide reassurance and respond to any concerns.

“If you experience or witness behaviour that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, we want you to report it. Even small pieces of information can make a difference and help us take action.”

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has issued travel advice ahead of a busy Sunday, with the Manchester Marathon taking place in the morning, followed by Manchester City’s Premier League fixture against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium later that afternoon.

While road closures and bus diversions will be in place, trams and dedicated matchday bus services will operate to help people travel around the region. TfGM is urging residents and visitors to plan journeys in advance.
